IE7 css compliance and png alpha support announced.

Chris Wilson announced friday on the IEBlog that IE7 will have support for png alpha transparency and also improve css support along with the previously mentioned security fixes. Though I’d like to believe this is so, I gotta say– I’ll believe it when I see it. Microsoft has a long history of noncompliance and outright defiance against compliance. This blog and the apparent openness and willingness of certain MS employees to listen to our comments and concerns is a step in the right direction, but actions speak MUCH louder than words.

Of course, in order to see if IE7 lives up to its promise I’d have to upgrade from win2k to XP. This is a typical MS ploy– yes it makes sense from a business standpoint for them, but it creates another potential problem for us web developers.

Nothing was mentioned about whether side by side installs will be possible. Since some people won’t be able to upgrade to the new browser due to hardware limitations, I’ll still, for quite some time, have to develop for both IE6 and the new IE7. Will I be able to run both on the same box without the angina producing hacks we had to use to get IE5 and 6 working on the same box?
