Content is KING!

In a discussion just started on WebProWorld the original poster poses the query, “1) Do you think content is the web’s biggest weakness? 2) If so, what would change things?”

Earlier in the article some links to Zeldman, Jeffrey Veen, and other web gurus and web guru wannabes bring up some interesting points about design and other things that affect the presentation of content. Veen is all for innovation in how that content is presented, citing Ajax bells and whistles as the next best thing since sliced bread, Zeldman bemoans the fact that good design is getting harder and harder to find, the others make comments that are a variation or combination of these two things.

I think they all missed the point. An attractive package may make you want to open it, but it’s ultimately what is IN the package that is important. Content is king.

The latest Google update, Jagger, tells me that the search engines have recognized this, and though their algorithms have a long way to go in ridding us of affiliate sites repeated a thousand times, directories that are nothing more than dmoz dumps, and splogs whose content is nothing but google adsense ads plastered on a page with rss feeds regurgitated from REAL sites, eventually you’ll begin to see the sites with good and original content whose architecture and design allows that content to be accessed easily rise to the top of the search engine returns.

That day can’t get here soon enough for me.
