WordPress Support on “Lunch Break”???
This is obviously a screenshot of WordPress Support on “lunch break”. Now, understand something. This is a MAJOR support site, upon which I depend for at least a portion of my livelihood. Now, if this was an isolated incident I probably wouldn’t blog it, but this type of crap, whether it be server timeouts, or other shenanigans like the support search recommending sites that aren’t even ON WordPress Support (ie Movable Type support urls???) is happening more and more as Mad Matt Mullenweig, amok at the helm, runs the WordPress Ship up onto the Rocks . . .
Is it any wonder why I’m recommending ModX as an alternative to WordPress these days? Taken at approximately 8:30AM US EDT.

Well, three weeks ago I didn’t know TypePad from WP. Having read up on it, I was ready to enthusiastically download WP and see how I felt about it–you know, be my own guy, a creator. “Out to lunch?” Man! For someone just embarking on all this, I guess I’m being driven (reduced?) to TypePad! I never heard of ModX, and I’m sure I’d have to know WP before I could consider it, so it’s a feeling of having studied up on something I had no business contemplating in the first place. All kinds of books are coming out about WP for beginners, and I thought I was a little ahead of the curve and really pretty eager to dive in only to find that I’m dealing with a bunch of hippies? I mean I laughed at first. I thought it was funny, but the next morning it was still the “Out to Lunch” thing, and then when it finally got back up and I downloaded I foolishly figured to upload on their site because it’s free and I’m still just trying to figure out my head from my ass with this, and, well, I’m still waiting on my activation link. The blurb says you’ll be up in seconds, and it’s been hours. I just don’t think I want to go to the expense of a paid hosting service this early on. Besides, why would anyone get involved with a program that’s put out by anybody this flakey? I mean there’s not even an attempt at courtesy! I would do Moveable Type but it has no audio capability to it that isn’t a clumsy plugin thing that I’m told can screw up if it’s put in wrong. To read up on WordPress is to think you’ve found the grail, but the reality is more Monty Python than Excaliber.

Neal, I can understand your frustration. I’ve been there, done that. Actually the wordpress community itself is great, most of the devs are decent coders and nice people. The ap is actually better than most blogging aps. There is, however, one individual who seems to be throwing a spanner into the works, and he happens to run the joint. I regularly communicate with some of the other folks on the team and they’ve expressed quite a bit of frustration since the head honcho doesn’t seem to listen to anybody.

Well, I’ve gone from thinking it was funny to being frustrated to thinking it’s funny again. Out to lunch! What an epithet! “We’re the Out to Lunch Bunch”. It’s been a day & a half and I still haven’t had my WP account activated. I guess I can always sign on with a hosting service that offers a free one month trial and get some practice that way. And if I’m allowed more than one weblog, then I’m happy to stay with the host for another couple of months to develop a serious site and keep with them if the blog succeeds.
Still, that’s a lot of ifs. So I’m going to look more into ModX, and I’m going to keep trying to activate my account with the WordPress people, if only out of morbid curiosity as to whether anything ever happens. If nothing does—and it becomes like ten or more attempts—I’m going to contact Brad Hill, the author of Bloggng for Dummies, and let him in on my experience. PeachTree is also coming out with its own beginning WP book, and I’ll contact them. There’s also a big development book that will be released this summer, and I’ll contact those guys, too. Lastly I have a friend who’s got some kind of site up that’s for throwing together a biting book about getting action from out-to-lunch companies, organizations like airlines & ISPs, etc. He would probably love to hear more about this head honcho you speak of so endearingly.
We could make him the poster boy for the out-to-lunch side of the Info Age.
If things with WP are as bad as you say, then there really should be an alternative site where a person can get an account where he or she can mess around with a practice blog until they get good and have their own style, just as it would be nice to have a plugins section and helpful articles.
One thing’s sure: If I want paid Web designer consultant guys, it’ll be Kickass.
