PC World names top 100 Tech Products of the Year

PC World has named their opinion of which are the top 100 Tech Products of the Year. Though generally I can see why stuff is on the list (like Google Maps and Apple Boot Camp) there are a few things on this list that I saw and my reaction was, “Huh???”

The first Huh came on #3, which is CraigsList.org. Why is this on a list of THIS year’s top tech products? Craigslist has been around for awhile, there’s nothing “new” here. There were more list items that got the Huh for the same reason– Google Search Engine (which has gotten worse, not better), Thunderbird, FireFox, DealNews.com, StumbleUpon, and others. If you’re making a list of THIS YEAR’S top 100 products, doesn’t that at least imply that the product was introduced this year OR so significantly improved that it was worthy of list note? None of these items even come close to qualifying, in my mind. Blogger??? Come on, be real, the interface and templating suck, and have been supplanted by three other blog interfaces, one of them Wordpress, which is also on the list and shouldn’t be, since it’s been around awhile and is actually going backward rather than forward in the quality department. Trillian? The one that, when I have a friend who’s using it, is crashycrashy more than it’s up, resulting in their name popping on and off the online list? Geez, what’s that doing on there?

C’mon, PC World, you can do better than that. In my opinion if you can’t fill out a list of 100, then make it 50, or even 20 and make sure the products on the list are truly worthy.
