Telecommunications, Politicians and Greed

Congress can be bought. The Telecommunications Corporations spent OUR money to buy enough politicians to take the first step toward KILLING network neutrality. That’s the message we’ve gotten with the passage of the COPE act and the defeat of the Markey amendment to it in the House of Representatives.

I, for one, will be looking at how my representatives voted on this issue. Any one of them who voted for COPE and against the Markey amendment will NOT be getting my vote.

The momentum now moves to the Senate. There seems to be a lot more sympathy for Network Neutrality there. The problem is that if there’s a conflict between the House and the Senate we all know how Our Fearless Leader will swing– Dubya ALWAYS sides with his pals in Big Business to the detriment of the American People. This fight is far from over. Even if Network Neutrality is defeated, I don’t think the Telecomms realize what they’re unleashing here. People are used to the internet the way it is. Don’t these companies understand that they are:

  1. Creating a PR nightmare for themselves?
  2. Killing their own business in the long run? There WILL eventually be an alternative to their bloodsucking broadband access.
  3. Guaranteeing that they will have EVERY OTHER US CORPORATION ready to take them to the Supreme Court if they block access to competition IN ANY WAY?

This issue is NOT going away. Ever. No matter who owns the infamous “Last Mile” nor how many Learned Professors and politicians the telecomms buy.
