The Easton Flood, June 29, 2006

Just to put all these photos in perspective for you, here’s a photo I took approximately 3 weeks ago from just south of the Easton Free Bridge. (click thumbnail for larger version.)

This is a photo of that same bridge taken today from up on the hill near the Governor Winthrop Building and looking southeast.

The rest of the photos tell rest of the story.

The Bridge approach, East end of Northampton Street. Yes, that’s floodwater.

One block away from the Free Bridge.

Looking over the Lehigh River Bridge at Rt. 611 and Coca Cola Mountain. See that white thing sticking out near the rocks and trees on the right? That’s one of the Rt. 611 streetlights.

Closed? Why?

This is why . . .

The Rt. 611 Lehigh River Bridge. Geez, you can’t even SEE the arches the river runs through.

Now, this flood didn’t get as high as the one LAST year. That one, the concrete dividers between the Freebridge walkway and the roadway were pushed over onto the deck by the force of the water, which was over the deck. They were also tossed about like a bunch of kid’s dominoes. This time it didn’t get that high.

BJ, I can’t believe those pictures! You poor thing! Your poor town!

You all deserve a big shipment of chocolate. I’ll see what I can do.

great pics! we live on 18th street and came down often to check the river. grew up on south 611…our old house was under 6 feet of water. i’m forwarding your site to a few “old” residents of easton..keep up the good work!

  3. BJ Says:

Robin, chocolate would be great (though I’d be perfectly happy to wait for the free chocolate drawing results) but truthfully I think the downtown residents would do better with mop buckets and disinfectant . . . :)

alli, I’m glad you moved up on the hill (I’m between 10th & 11th) since six feet of water left behind a lotta mud and mildew, I’m sure. I helped friends along the river in the Riegelsville/Milford area clean out this time. What a mess!

We lived in Easton for 30 years. Never saw water like this. What a shame.

  5. Andrew Gates Says:

Oh poor you! It’s bad to see so much water logged in the streets. Just wanna know how you guys are operating and doing your tasks.:(

  6. Chris Jarrett Says:

My mom grew up in Easton, as did a few generations before, so though I’ve never lived there myself, I was concerned about the city. Thank you for the pictures. Here’s hoping for a dry spell. Please send some rain down to Georgia.
