IE7 to be distributed via Automatic Updates
Tony Chor announced on the IEBlog that IE7 will be distributed as a high priority automatic update. The release is planned for the 4th quarter of the year, right in time for all those Christmas Computer purchases. Oboy.
If there is a problem or issue with IE7, users can uninstall IE7 via Add/Remove Programs; this will revert the user back to IE6. I think it’s excellent that they’re allowing users to rollback to IE6, since it’s going to take the web development community awhile to “clean up the mess” left in the wake of the release, as sites break all over the place, no matter how well planned for the rollout. After all, beta is beta, and we don’t know how the final version will really differ from what we have now. Plus it’s going to take us awhile to learn new hacks. It is IE, after all, and no matter how much work they’ve done, it won’t be totally compliant in the way the other good browsers are.
The release will only be for XP, though rumor has it that the beta’s been tried on earlier versions of windows and found to work.
