Net Neutrality hits the BigTime . . .
Last week it was Jon Stewart on The Daily Show spoofing on Senator Stevens‘ internet explanation. Now you know when the comedians start ragging on an issue it’s hit the big time.
But it gets even better– Just search on CafePress for “Internet Tubes” or “internet Stevens” and let everyone know how you feel about the Senator!
But it’s not all fun and games out there. Andrew Raff found out how the internet will work in the future when he posted his “Internet Tubes” song based on Senator Stevens words on his MySpace space, the Ted Stevens Internet Fan Club. The song, along with the MySpace space, was taken down by MySpace for supposed TOS violations. MySpace is owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., which also has huge holdings in Cable TV, hence a vested interest in the killing of Network Neutrality. Wired News got the scoop and reported the Ted Stevens Fan Club story, after which the MySpace site was mysteriously put back with no explanation. I suspect that News Corp. realized that if the Ted Stevens Fan Club was not returned to MySpace a PR nightmare would ensue, especially since Raff, the Club’s creator, is newly graduated from law school, and the song’s music was written by Raff and consisted of Senator Ted Stevens’ words as the lyrics, which are in the public domain, so copyright infringement was not an issue. This is exactly the sort of censorship we’re all concerned about if the end of Network Neutrality is legislated.
There is a light side to this though, and that’s in the comments on the MySpace site, a few of which I’ll repeat for your enjoyment–
Honey! The internets are leaking again…
A friend of mine recently had her internet shut off. So in a way, she had her tubes tied.
I’m also from AK and I interned with Sen. Stevens, and he impressed me with his high level of technical understanding.
I haven’t been that wrong in a long time. Or perhaps ever.
my internet hasnt arrivved yet, has you guys seen it?

While this is veeeery funny, let’s not forget why we’re laughing. Net neutrality is vital, and Stevens opposes it despite not understanding the issue. To help ensure that other Senators begin to listen to people who do understand the internet
