Kickass- Noir, a 2 column Widget enabled WordPress Theme for Download
*** Update! *** WP 2.1 Compatible!!! I know it’s been awhile since I put out a WordPress Theme for free download. A client didn’t like this design and it was just WAY too good to toss out, so you all benefit! This WordPress theme is copyright Kickass Web Design and is released under the Creative Commons License free for non-commercial use as long as the link to http://kickasswebdesign.com remains intact. Linking to my blog pages so people can download my themes is permitted, and in fact welcomed. Linking to my download file, or snagging it to include for download on your page is not permitted.
This theme is a flexible two column layout with navigation on the right. It’s completely widget enabled. This layout has been tested in all late model final version browsers in Win, Mac and Linux, and is working perfectly in all but IEMac, which is 98% okay and totally usable.

Those of you who download this, please pay attention. I do not have time to support my FREE to use themes. If you need help, please ask on the Wordpress support forum or email me for a quote on fixing whatever you screwed up because you did something I told you not to do (see below.) I’m not putting a readme.txt in this time since no one reads them. This theme is working just the way it is, and since it’s widget enabled there is nothing any of you should have to change in the code. If you want to change images and colors, fine, you can find them in the style.css file, and as long as the images on the top and bottom of the side column are the exact same size as the ones I used then you should be okay. Any changes you make you do so at your own risk. Changing a horizontal width or padding is damn near guaranteed to break this layout. The right column is wide enough to support up to a 160px wide ad, and the content column can take up to a 468px width ad. Go wider at your own peril. That goes for image widths in those columns too. Font sizes will scale nicely as things are now. If you change them do so on everything but the body and do it in percentages or all bets are off as to rescaling font sizes working in your version. BACK UP YOUR FILES BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.

Y’know what’s great about this theme (besides the “film noir” look of course!) - it’s super for folks with a little bit of visual-acuity problem. I can even see this one without my glasses - and READ the posts!

Thanks! I had fun with this one. It was a bit of a challenge since I’m so used to working with color, and the only color besides the grayscale in this one is on the hover.

Thanks for the compliment! A customer just contracted for that very thing. He is paying for exclusive rights to it though. Sorry!
When time permits I will be doing a three column widget enabled theme of a different design. Check back in a couple weeks.

Alan, I’m happy you love the theme, but can’t afford the time to support free themes, and don’t know anything about the plugin you mention. If you ask on the WordPress forum I’m sure someone can help you.

Hello –
Great theme - thank you for providing it!
When using “Categories” and “Archives” in the sidebar widget, is the Noir theme compatible with the “Show posts count” option? Since Noir uses block, not inline, links, I’m unsure if these two features are compatible.
If not, no worries; I’m already enjoying the theme and appreciate what you’ve done so far. Thanks again!

Thanks Ken! As it stands, no, the “show post count” will show on the next line since it isn’t inside the link, which is pretty ugly. But if you simply put the hovercolor on only the text and take it off the background, then you can take the display: block attribute out of those sidebar links. The reason the block attribute was used was so the whole area would be colored on hover, and not just the text area. Take away its reason for being and you can then safely remove it.
