The Banned Site tool turns up something interesting!

Over on Threadwatch they were discussing the newest MSN seach parameter, which allows the parameter LinkFromDomain. Russ Virante, one of the commenters, posted his newest tool based on that parameter, which will show you which of your outbound links that are banned from Google, pretty useful if you want to weed them out, though it only shows the first hundred, and this site has more outbounds than that. Be that as it may, it was useful in weeding out one from my webgeek directory.

I also ran it on the Bitchslappin Political Blog to see what turned up over there. Vicki wrote a post about a guy helping bloggers who are in politically unsafe places to blog anonymously, and his blog is banned from Google which, though he seems sincere in trying to help people who would otherwise not have a voice, is basically teaching folks how to cloak which is a google no-no. Okay, we can understand why he’s banned. But the other surprise was the Verizon PoliBlog, which I won’t link to, but you can find here:

http://poliblog.verizon.com/PoliBlog/blogs/poliblog/default.aspx

Hmm, one has to wonder why that is? Is it something in the algorithm? Did they do something shady? Have they been spammy? Or could it have something to do with Verizon’s stance on Net Neutrality?

Yup, I definitely get why the “anonymous blogging” link would get goog-no-nos all over the place. But that’s okay, since those who need a voice don’t necessarily care about google (at least not to begin with).

Interesting about the Verizon plog though…. VERY.

I ran the tool on my site. Evidently most, if not all, of the blogs I’ve linked to are banned, as well as Wikipedia, The Free Dictionary, Wordpress, archives.gov, and the Washington Post. The algorithm is a bit odd, to say the least.

Rick, I have links to WordPress and The Washington Post and Wikipedia and they come up green, which means not banned. Only the ones that come up red are banned.

I have noticed something. All the links that come up red are subdomains, though not all sites set up as subdomains come up red. It may be in the way these particular subdomains are set up. I know for a fact that the verizon poliblog is on a windoze server, could be in the way the redirect is handled for the sub.

I was reading it wrong. My apologies. I feel quite embarrassed now.

It’s okay! At least you know now that all your outbounds are good ones!
