New Year’s Resolution a day late
I promise not to procrastinate writing blog entries . . .
Yes, I know I’ve been remiss with writing since two days before thanksgiving, and I will turn that around, things are finally starting to feel normal again.
Now, to turn this into a more “on topic” post about the value of blogging. Since I’ve only been posting once or twice a week for the last 5 weeks or so, I’ve seen a drop in my backlinks for the first time since I put this site up, probably due to less links in the update services. My stats have similarly levelled out, though they didn’t take an actual dive. Now, in all fairness, December is usually a weaker month for me since this is not an ecommerce site, but if I had been blogging the way I usually do I would have seen at least a bit of an increase, if not the usual spike up. Blogging is a very powerful site building tool in more ways than just for adding content. If set up properly a blog will add backlinks and start the discussion, which makes a site sticky. Each article adds more keyphrase strength and gives a site that many more entry pages. Blogs are the ultimate Search Engine Optimization tool. And the goodness of RSS feeds multiply that effect since every time I post my subscriber list is notified, which increases my visitors.
I know people who question the value of a blog on a business site, questioning whether it’s appropriate for business or whether there’s enough to write about. If you love what you do, and have a lot of knowledge about it, whether it be selling widgets or whatever, you can easily find a couple subjects to write about weekly. More is better, but that’s enough. The trick is to be consistent. It’s when I lost some of my consistency that things slowed down here. So if you can commit to one article a week and stick to it, then your site will benefit.
