Back to “Normal” (or as normal as it gets around here.)
Let me preface this by saying *** KNOCK ON WOOD!!! ***
The Comment Timeout Plugin worked SO WELL that I only had one comment spam break through overnight, where I’d routinely see 20 or more.
I wasn’t doing so well on the contact form spam, I got around 40 of those overnight and they were still coming in at a rate of a couple few an hour when I got up this morning. I really didn’t want to go through major gyrations and I NEED the contact forms in posts, damnit! It’s what makes this site convert so well for me. I looked at the plugin at BeastBlog, and the newest one on Dagon Design, and neither recommend comments being put in posts, and both seem needlessly . . . complicated. So I simply checked back at Chip Cuccio’s site to see if there was an updated version of WP-Contact-Form ][ and yes, there was a version newer than what I was running. Installed the new version and the spams stopped ( *** knock on wood *** ) without me having to change anything in any of the MANY wordpress posts that have contact forms on them.
Might it be too much to ASK that WordPress start dealing with this issue within core? Oh, that's right, Akismet, coded by the same person who brought us WordPress, throws off false positives like crazy according to everyone I know who's used it . . . forget THAT idea.
So anyway, it looks like I bought me some time before the next problem or issue ( ***knock on wood*** ) and hopefully I can get some work done today to make up for the time I wasted on these various issues yesterday. Of course I'm offering up a suitable sacrifice to the Geek Gods to ensure at least a FEW problem free days (dare I wish for weeks?) while also offering a suitable sacrifice to point the attentions of the Geek Gargoyles and Gremlins at THE DAMN SPAMMERS!
*sigh*

Actually, I don’t get false positives with either akismet or BB – though my daughter has the false positive problem with BB AND it won’t let her or anyone load her sites (which is strange, but definitely BB – using the latest version, happens every time, retrograding to 1.24 fixes it, though she does still get occasional FPs) – I tend to think that problem is something with her IP (German telecom basically).
There’s a few current posts ALL THE TIME on the wp forum about Akismet – the latest one is a couple of poor guys who have some real mega-troubles:

Pretty outrageous; only Matt Mullenweig could think it was “okay”….

personally i use Peter’s antispam plugin. It’s a captcha thingy.
Nextto that i did a little name editing on the wp-comments-post.php file. i changed the last – into a _ and edited the files that pointed to that one (2 per theme)
Not a spambot to be seen on my site ever since. And yes, comments still work

Er. Could you (that is, Mister O) elaborate on what “Peter’s plugin” might be? And perhaps provide a link to same?
