Windows XP End of Life Announcement from Microsoft

Story on XP End of Life from Computer World says that Mainstream Support will be in place until April 2009, and security patches until April 2014.

This is important when put into the context of the next windows version after Vista, which will be going modular and moving to a subscription model. Which means being nickel dimed for every damn thing you need to make your hardware or programs work.

I just hope that Linux Flavors and Linux Program Devs see this for the opportunity it is, and get their GUI in order for non-geeks before the 2014 deadline. I’m sure I’ll be making a switch before then, with the only question being whether it’ll be to Mac or Linux. Unless by some miracle there is someday a new kid on the block . . .

This is too bad, I really liked XP. Moved over to Vista and had immediate problems with my registry. Not sure if it was my own fault or what, but used a product called RegCure and it helped for a bit, then problems came back.

No, it’s not your fault. Vista is a problem child that has problems with certain hardware, certain third party programs and certain hardware configurations. It’s all been pretty well documented, to the point where there’s a class action lawsuit against Microsoft for the Vista Ready Label, and numerous articles about Corporate IT departments who refuse to upgrade.

I’ve got an extra boxed copy of XP pro tucked away against a rainy day. Hopefully between my recently bought machine (with XP and NOT Vista!) along with my two laptops and that extra license I’ll get through for the next six years, and then hopefully things will shake out right for one of the Linux distros (probably Ubuntu, the way it’s looking now.)

I keep seeing this question and resulting confusion over WinXP end of life. End of Availability for XP according to Microsoft is June 2008 (Public)and January 2009 for OEM and system builders. That means you can’t buy it after that. End of support occurs in April 2014. My question is when will you no longer be able to ‘Activate’ it on a new install?

  4. BJ Says:

Well, it gets more confusing, since MS just announced the extension of XP OEM sales for use on lower end laptops, since Linux was starting to pick up some steam in that market.

  5. Microshaft Says:

Well just like in the history books, every great empire comes to a screeching halt. Microsoft has already lost Russia and China as users (their governments are moving their citizens to Linux due to the fact that they were being pressured for using pirated copies of Windows !!!). Looks like I have 5 years or less to get my butt *nix’d…heh The way I see it is MS = GREED , Apple = CONTROL , Linux = Freedom to the People. Only problem I have with Linux distro’s is that it is a huge learning curve commin’ from Windows.

  6. Guy Ames - Cheap Computers Guide Says:

Microshaft, I think you’re right. It’s gonna hafta be Linux. Yes, there’ll be a learning curve, but people will make it. Especially if Linux meets them halfway.

Especially for people who build their own – who really want control over the whole experience and use of their systems – it’s going to be Linux.

Yes, MS really dropped the ball with Vista…

I like xp, its better than Vista and faster

  8. C.A. Says:

XP is still better than Vista. Linux is the way to go.Ubuntu still have lots to achieve but its getting there.

  9. andrew Says:

I don’t think Vista will be used majorly until 4-5 years later. Look at XP, when they first came out no one used it coz th e hardware wasn’t ready.

    Agreed about Linux,

Windows always ends up putting a lot of useless stuff (like being able to see all open window in 3 dimensions) into every new release, which puts the consumer in the, purposeful, position where they have to buy new hardware to support their OS.

I’ve been using RedHat since 3.x and, while Fedora and CentOS are sometimes problematic, ever since OpenOffice came out and got streamlined, I find no use for Windows whatsoever.

    Nice post :)

Mike, all that junk they put in is the first thing I strip out when I boot up a new machine. My XP desktop looks not much different than my win95 desktop did back in its day.

The thing that irritates me no end is that as long as Windows has a chunk of the end user market, I’ll have to own a windows machine, since I HAVE to test on all platforms that have a chunk of the market.

  12. Mike Golvach Says:

    :)

I’ll probably end up switching to Linux exclusively eventually. In the meantime, my Windows 2000 machine is still screaming at 384Mb RAM maxed and a 700Mhz cpu.

My XP system is about 3 times as powerful and, even with all the services turned off (themes, etc), it’s slower. I tried Vista out, but I couldn’t get past the freeze-ups and all that. I really don’t need to see the windows I can cycle through in 3-D ;)
